A Day In The Life of ALI and Her Family

It was so much fun spending time with Ali for her Richmond family photography shoot. One of the most fantastic things about photographing families in Richmond Park is that the space is so versatile. Every part of Richmond Park on a different day can look totally unique. From the beautiful gardens at Pembroke Lodge, to the sprawling green space in between the Royal Ballet School.  Extra points if you are able to spot a deer in the proceedings!  I was glad when Ali suggested meeting at Richmond Park for her family shoot. This location is great for nature loving South West London families. Unlike some parks, Richmond Park caters for families who have children in and out of the buggy riding age with wide gravel paths for bikes and buggies alike! In a short walking distance you can reach the most beautiful spots.

Natural and Outdoor Richmond Family Photography, Surrey

One sunny Saturday afternoon I met Ali and her extended family at the Pen Ponds location in Richmond Park. Joining Ali, along with her husband and beautiful daughter was Ali’s sister’s family and her mother and father. Keeping it in the family as they say! With my photographic style being very relaxed and natural with a focus on natural light. Because of this I navigate family shoots with flexibility and choose specific moments and settings for the guided portraiture. This suits photographing children because there is no forced portraiture and instead natural and happy moments are captured. Therefore, adults are more relaxed as a result because they are not worrying about why their children are not smiling on queue! Due to this we walk along, play some games and when the setting and mood strike me this is when the guided portraiture takes place.

Although Tamara and Nick are getting hitched in Surrey at Busbridge Lakes, they wanted to have a London engagement photography shoot. To me this was thrilling. Being predominantly a Surrey wedding photographer does not mean that as a business I am limited to just the surrounding areas. The couple chose to have a Greenwich Park engagement shoot on a chilly morning in Spring. Finding places that are important to you as a couple is something that as a wedding photographer I encourage. Places hold special meanings to us as people which I think is important to incorporate.

Relaxed London Engagement   Photography in  Greenwich Park 

Tamara and Nick chose this Royal Park for their engagement shoot together. The space held a special place in their hearts and was somewhere they both wanted to remember together. Since chatting they said they would have found anywhere else to have the shoot hard to pick. That is the beauty of memories, some stick out completely. Similar to a previous couple that I had the pleasure of photographing. Amy and Ruth could think of no where else but Cusworth Hall for their engagement shoot together. There are sometimes venues or places that mean an incredible amount to a couple.

To say that I am looking forward to photographing Tamara and Nick’s wedding is an understatement. Their wedding venue is a particular favourite of mine and I cannot wait to get back there. Tamara is Russian and some of the wedding traditions that she has been describing to me sound incredible. Learning about other cultures and traditions is a wonderful experience. Being present at so many ceremonies and marriages holds immense responsibility and honour.

On the morning of the shoot, all three of us met at the gates of Greenwich Park. Tamara and Nick were slightly nervous – as we all are sometimes – about having their photograph taken. As I have said before, engagement shoots are the perfect opportunity to blow away those cobwebs of doubt. We walked, chatted and took some relaxed couples portraits. Hopefully, by the end of the shoot both Tamara and Nick felt more comfortable in front of the camera. It is always wonderful when couples relay back their first impressions and Tamara’s was just that. She emailed me and said:

“Thanks so much for the photos! It was the best surprise to receive so many photos and am so glad Nick and I picked you as our photographer!”

Since photographing this engagement I have had the pleasure of capturing Tamara and Nick’s wedding at Busbridge Lakes wedding. Newborn photography is the most wonderful experience. As a family photographer you are able to be immersed into the life of a new family unit. It is an incredibly special experience, made even more special by being in the presence of a miracle. Sam had been at the same school as me many moons ago. Through social media I was aware of the struggle she and her husband Alex were enduring. Their little bundle of joy was born at 27 weeks old which is dangerously early for a baby to arrive into the world.

Watching Sam’s family journey through social media, I could see that their time together was emotional, fraught and unimaginable. With Joshua giving them life threatening scares it was the most terrible feeling to read what they were going through, but it was clear that he was a little fighter. I cannot even imagine what their family went through, but it was quite clear that Joshua was a resilient little premie baby. Watching their story over social media like a little fly on the wall it was clear how bonded they all were as a family unit. With both Alex and Sam reading Joshua Harry Potter through his incubator doors, to photographs of them together having skin to skin cuddles.

After Joshua was discharged I kept up to date with Sam’s journey and the milestones that Joshua made. It was so enlightening and heart warming to know how far they had all come. When Sam and I made contact to organise a newborn photography shoot in Guildford I was over the moon. Reconnecting with old school friends is a wonderful thing and being able to be in the presence of her little miracle Joshua was even more amazing. Meeting their family was such a lovely experience and it was an honour to spend time with Sam, Alex and Joshua.

Christmas is a special time for most families and Sam and Alex were very aware that this first Christmas together was going to be a special one. They decided that spending the time together and decorating the tree would be something that they would want to remember. Being a mum with a premie baby is quite isolating as you have to stay within your own walls to keep all of the germs and viruses away from your little one. I felt incredibly privileged to be allowed into their space and document this time for them.

This is what A Day In The Life family photography is all about. Finding a moment that you want to remember. The littlest things are worth documenting and to have photographs to look back on is the most special part of the process. During the ‘day in the life’ shoot there is always time for a guided family portrait which I decide upon when there is a moment of calm and convenience.

Family portraits are not meant to be stuffy, posed and awkward. They should be calm and candid and this is how I capture you. Relaxed, informal and just how you are, focussing on the most important little moments. Life Is precious and fleeting and it is important to remember those moments that we would otherwise forget. A family decorating the Christmas tree after a traumatic, and at the same time uplifting year is such a wonderful celebration of life.

I love it when I get a booking for Surrey family photography. The mixture of photographing weddings versus family shoots is more one sided in the summer peak of ‘wedding season’. So when Jennie emailed me I was so excited. It is always a very special feeling when a family want you to photograph their family. It is even more special when you get to revisit a family that you ave photographed before! I first photographed Jennie and her family when they entered a competition to win A Day In The Life shoot with me. You can see the family shoot here on a previous blog post. On that day we spent the morning at their house and chatted about their life as new parents.

Fast forward and Jennie asked me to photograph their family again. Much like before they were happy to spend time at home and just document their time together now that their daughter was growing up. However this time the shoot would be more focussed around them as a family – before a new little someone made their way into the world. Jennie was expecting her second child and was conscious that she wanted to appreciate the time that her little family had together before the exciting new arrival of Arabelle’s sibling.

With the new experiences that life with two children brings I think that it was a wonderful idea to document and remember life before new babies are born. Much like couples taking a ‘baby-moon’ before their expected due date to appreciate time together, having a little family shoot before a second child is born is a celebration of your unit, of your tribe. To remember what it was like before you had to juggle a million and one things for two hungry humans instead of one for example!

When I revisited the Spary household much was the same, apart from a few more toddler toys, some feng shui furniture moves and a new bathroom upstairs! It was like I had never been away really. I arrived on a lovely sunny afternoon. We chatted over a cup of tea and talked about how life was whilst we waited for Arabelle to wake up from her nap. When we heard the tell tale signs on the baby monitor I followed Edward up to see Arabelle. Those big beautiful eyes were a little sleepy and it only took a few moments for her to be the smiley baby I had photographed a few years before.

Arabelle was sure to show me her favourite toys and I watched as they had a little bit of lunch. Although when you look through the images you would think that we had styled her in those cute bunny ears, but no! It was all Arabelle’s doing! She adorably kept pointing to the top of her head and saying “bunny” with this cheeky grin. That kind of inside smile where a toddler is just learning how to talk.

When ever I photograph families I always fit in a portrait of everyone. These are important to remember in amongst the candid and documentary style images. With children I understand that this is not always a scheduled occurrence so I choose the most opportune moment when parents are having a cuddle rather than trying to force and stage it. I hope that this is conveyed in these images and that you enjoy looking through them. I had such a blast revisiting Jennie and her family and it still makes me smile looking back at Arabelle in those gorgeous bunny ears!

A Magical Woodland Wedding

If you were to think of destination wedding photography Sweden – this wedding would be your mood board. Get your Pinterest boards ready because today I have for you a Swedish wedding extravaganza! Full confession: I have lusted after this wedding ever since I met with Henrik and Thea to discuss their plans. The setting for their wedding was Kroksta Gard; a gorgeous red fronted Scandinavian barn set in the countryside of Upsalla. Found in the middle of the countryside down a long path surrounded by silver birch trees. Walking to the venue felt like you were entering into a Swedish dream.  This beautiful red barn that was rented as a dry hire space was the perfect location for the couples vision.

“All we had hired was a barn” Henrik explained “and although it was wonderful to have the creative freedom to do whatever we wanted, looking back we’re very proud that we, along with our nearest and dearest, managed to pull it off!”  Oh boy did they manage to pull it off the most gorgeous Swedish wedding indeed! Seriously scrolling through their wedding images it is impossible to guess that nearly all the elements of the day were created by the couple themselves along with their friends and family.

Henrik and Thea described their day as a “rustic Scandi farm midsummer nights dream”.  Which they executed to perfection. They’re styling was gorgeous, from hand painted table settings to a personalised VW camper van photo booth.  When reminiscing about their Swedish wedding Thea said that she “had to keep pinching myself all day as I was sure it was all just a dream”.  Guests found their seats written on rustic little pieces of brown paper hanging from the iconic red barn door outside the venue situated between draped green foliage and ate their wedding breakfast from a food truck outside the barn. I mean taco’s for your wedding breakfast – what is not to love about that?  

“The hard work of all out amazing friends and family made everything possible” Thea said. The couples wedding definitely was a labour of love from all parties involved. Where should the list begin? Thea’s mother arranged all the flowers with a close family friend for the day. When I say all the flowers I mean ALL the flowers. The button holes, the table settings, the bouquets – the LOT. It was incredible what they achieved together. The photographs speak for themselves and the arrangements were stunning. Not only were the flowers arranged by family, but Thea’s friend and bridesmaid had sewed every napkin on the tables to be the perfect size and fit for the plates. They were tied neatly with a gorgeous Swedish themed napkin string. It was all of these little touches that made Henrik and Thea’s day so beautiful and personal.

Thea’s wedding cake was extraordinary. Topped with two golden stags and surrounded by gorgeous peony flowers. She herself made the wedding cake for her big day which she was icing well into the early hours the evening of the night before the big day. There are so many personal touches when I write down the details for this unbelievable Swedish wedding. One of my favourite details was that Thea’s Grandad picked and dried all of the confetti from his garden in Australia. He then had them shipped over for her as he could not be there. Pulling together all of your resources is vital when planning a dry hire wedding, but also essential if that wedding is overseas. Thea and Henrik had a family member DJ their entertainment for the evening with banging tracks and their favourite songs – including ‘Vindaloo’ for Henrik and his stag party!

The beauty of destination wedding photography is that as a photographer I always get to the country that the wedding is being held a couple of days early. This enables me to get acquainted with the area and to also arrange meetings with my lovely couples to go through their wedding plans before the big day. The day before the wedding I met Henrik and Thea to walk around the venue and to check in with them both. We wandered around the site and they particularly wanted outside input for their ceremony location “Jesse was so helpful in making sure that we had made the right decision” Thea explained “and advised us on how the light would be in different spots around the woodland”.

The couple had a close school friend as their marriage celebrant which was held in the middle of the most gorgeous woodland. They both agreed that the ceremony was the highlight of their day recounting that “it was such a special location and it was just how we wanted it.”   A school friend sang two gorgeous songs during the ceremony and had the guests join in too. It was truly one of the most magical ceremonies that I have ever had the chance to be a part of.  Looking around there was not a dry eye in the house and it was such a magical experience to be around people who were singing with the couple who had chosen the songs that were personal to them.

Thea and her bridesmaids got ready upstairs whilst Henrik and his groomsmen were downstairs. Thea chose a gorgeous dress from French Connection paired with a pair of cute Swedish Hasbeens. Her bridesmaids all chose dresses that they had in their possession already.  Their styles married together perfectly and complemented Thea’s dress choice and the flowers that went with them. There is something really magical about choosing dresses and outfits that people feel truly comfortable in. So often bridesmaids feel that they have to be matching with their dresses. When in actual fact miss-matching your outfits is a great way to make your wedding stand out and also be more eco friendly. You can see from a previous blog post of mine “How To Have a More Eco Friendly Wedding” that choosing your own dress can reduce the impact on the environment.

The reception featured the most gorgeous tasting table with tapas elements and cheese, along with pink gin cocktails. The couples speeches were held outside in the glorious sunshine by the barn on top of an antique old trailer. As the party continued outside with games of KUBB and dancing we snuck away for some portraits. “We were quite nervous about the couples photographs” remarked Thea “but they are some of our favourites and the time we got to spend together just the two of us was a highlight of the day”. We were really spoilt for choice with the location and as soon as the sun was setting we walked back to the woods where they had said ‘I Do’ earlier in the day.

Together as a couple, Henrik and Thea were unconventionally wonderful. As a couple they broke from almost all wedding traditions on their big day right from the very start “we walked down the aisle together hand in hand and in to married life in our own way” Henrik said.  Perhaps this should be the motto for all couples looking to get married. Step into married life in your own way! Listen to your gut and don’t feel bad when you ask others for help. With Henrik and Thea’s wedding as an example, it doesn’t take an individual to organise a wedding – it takes takes a village!

Being part of Thea and Henrik’s Swedish wedding day was nothing other than magical. They are such wonderful people and surround themselves with the most fantastic friends and family. They were kind enough to say some wonderful words about me which still have me blushing as I write them down now!

I honestly can’t recommend Jesse enough. Her wonderful personality, dazzling creativity and incredible professionalism has given us the perfect wedding photos and we couldn’t be happier.

When I got the call to do newborn photography Surrey for Becki I was so exited. I had photographed her wedding to Marcus at Waverley Abbey and it was my first ever gig. I mean FRESH. As a couple they took a massive leap of faith with me and their big day was my baptism of wedding fire. I had been second shooting for a while and had wanted a chance to shoot my own wedding. I had known Becki since school and together we agreed that I could photograph her wedding as my first solo job. When Becki’s bridesmaid got in contact with me this year, she wanted to gift her best friend a day in the life shoot for her new little family. I was so excited to say yes and to meet Becki’s new addition.

Being a new parent is very tiring, so when you book a day in the life shoot with me the sessions last up to two hours not a whole day! In this time I document a day in your life that you feel is special to you. This can be quality time with your newborn baby or a birthday party, an adoption celebration day or a Saturday morning tradition making pancakes. During our day in the life session there is guided family portrait time which I determine in a moment of calm and ease. Family portraits do not have to be stuffy, or posed with kids crying. But calm and unposed, this is how I document you. Relaxed, informal and just how you are.

Becki and Marcus were adjusting to life as new parents of little Kit. Who was absolutely gorgeous I might add. They were both absolutely besotted with Kit and it is always so wonderful to witness new parents and their babies. We spent the morning chatting about motherhood, lack of sleep an the immense love that had overcome them since Kit had arrived. It was lovely to catch up with Becki. What a wonderful experience to follow a family from wedding to the birth of their baby. It was a privilege to photograph their new family, surrounded by images of their wedding in frames around their house was so lovely.

This is why a day in the life photoshoots are so special. I am able to record a frozen moment in your life forever. It is a day that you found important enough to visually capture. Childhood is so fleeting, children grow up so fast and if you blink you will miss it. In my eyes any day with your family is one worth remembering and documenting.

A Relaxed and Intimate Naming Day Ceremony Chelmsford

When Bethany got in contact for a naming day ceremony I was so excited. I had photographed her wedding a couple of years previously. She had been married at Stock Brook Manor and it was so lovely to be called upon again. Especially as this time I would get to meet the new addition to her family. Little Bobby-Lee (what a gorgeous name I might add!) I started photography with Bethany at her mums house in Chelmsford. We spent some time catching up and chatting about the new life of motherhood. It was a lovely sunny day so we spent some time in the garden which Bobby absolutely loved! His smiley little face was so adorable.

Bethany chose to have the naming day ceremony at a lovely eco social centre near to her home. The Highwood Villiage Hall is the perfect place to host a family get together. The hall is beautifully light and bright and is decorated with art work from the local school.  There is a kitchen facility and tons of space to put chairs for guests. Bethany put on a great spread of food for her guests and a gorgeous cake made for the occasion. A family friend conducted the ceremony. Both the parents and the god parents had to recite a beautiful piece of writing about looking after and protecting Bobby. It was a very emotional ceremony with lots of happy tears. It was the most beautiful way to celebrate little Bobby-Lee.

After the ceremony had finished and the god parents had promised to watch over Bobby, Bethany’s family and friends stayed for a lovely afternoon. All my favourite classic party food was there, which bought back so many memories. There was even a little impromptu picnic outside on the grass for the littlest of the day.   During a family day in the life shoot I will always schedule in time for family portraits. This because I feel that these are an important memory of the day.

I do not focus my photography around these, instead I observe how the day is panning out and can sense when children do not want to have their photograph taken. I choose a moment in the day when someone is having a cuddle and then we have a quick organised family portrait. Quick and easy without a screaming baby in sight or a parent sighing “PLEASE just smile at the camera!” These days are precious and for you to remember. They are not meant to be looked back on with stress and resentment, but a feeling of calm and nostalgia.

Amy and Ruth chose to have a Cusworth Hall engagement shoot on a gorgeously sunny Sunday afternoon. I always ask my couples if there are any places that mean a lot to them or if they have landmarks with any significance to their relationship. So Amy and Ruth took me to Cusworth Hall for their engagement shoot as this was initially the place where Amy was going to propose. We had a picnic in the grounds of the beautiful building and I heard all about why this place was so special to them.

FUN and RELAXED Cusworth Hall Engagement Shoot

Cusworth Hall is very close to where the couple live and they often take long walks here from their house. Amy said that she had originally planned to propose to Ruth at Cusworth Hall. On the day she had arranged a picnic – not unlike the one that we enjoyed together – and she was going to get down on one knee in the beautiful gardens. However, mother nature had other intentions. The rain started pouring and Amy knew that this would not be the right time to do it. Despite having carried the ring around with her for two weeks; Amy’s plan had been wrecked.  Later in the day the sun came out and the couple took a walk down the canal near their house. It was here along a walk they did so much that Amy got down on one knee and proposed to Ruth, who of course said YES!

It just shows that even if you plan a grand proposal, sometimes the simple and most emotional declarations are in places that are unexpected and completely natural. I have had the pleasure of knowing Ruth and Amy for nearly ten years and when they asked me to photograph their wedding I was over the moon. They are planning a DIY tipi wedding at the glorious Inkersall Grange Farm with their closet friends and family. On a personal level I am so ecstatic to photograph this wedding; because who does not want to take pictures of their best friends getting hitched? Up on the blog today is Anna and Ross’s glorious Ashridge House wedding.  The last time I was here at this estate was when Anna, Ross and I came to photograph their sunrise engagement shoot.  We met at the crack of dawn, it was still dark and unfortunately the sun never came out from behind the clouds. However, Anna and Ross are such an optimistic couple, that they did not let the weather dampen their experience of having an engagement shoot together. Because of these attributes I had high expectations for their wedding day. You can see Anna and Ross’s engagement shoot here.

Anna and Ross chose to have their wedding at Ashridge House because it had great importance to them as a couple. They lived very close to the estate and frequently came on long walks and park runs around the area. Anna explained to me that they were both loved the out doors and felt that having a connection to somewhere they were getting married was important to them. They wanted their wedding to have a hygge feel and a sense of love. She described how she wanted the church to be filled with candles and blankets to enhance the Danish coined feeling of ‘hygge’.

The couple got married at the end of November on possibly one of the coldest Autumn days. This did not deter Anna from choosing the most beautiful sheer lace wedding dress from Berkhamstead Brides. Anna’s bridesmaids wore lovely matching plum floor length dresses which were in keeping with the winter wedding theme. Ross went for the traditional grey suit and tails from William Young in Hertfordshire – which all of his groomsmen wore as well. The morning was filled with love, happy tears and excitement – it was apparent from the first time that I met Anna and Ross that they were very emotionally connected. When Anna walked down the aisle to meet her husband to be, there was not a dry eye in sight and Ross could barely contain his joy to see Anna in her wedding dress for the first time.

The wedding table decoration reflected the winter hygge vibe of the wedding. Anna and Ross wanted a floral scheme that echoed the deep rich tones similar to the bridesmaids dresses of plum, grape, and blush. To emulate the feeling of hygge the mood that florists Myrtle and Bloom replicated was relaxed, natural and romantic with woodland elements to reflect the surroundings of the Ashridge House estate. They created low level table designs for the wedding breakfast tables with woodland elements, pine cones, natural moss, peppercorns and fairy lights to enhance the hygge brief.

Anna and Ross filled their wedding venue with plenty of personal touches. Their wedding cake was personally made for them by a family member and they fashioned a DIY Autumn themed photo frame with props for their Instax Polaroid photo booth. The favours that awaited their guests at the wedding breakfast were home made jars of jam which I thought was a really beautifully and unique touch.Throughout the reception Anna and Ross had chosen to have a magician entertain their guests and the last trick of the evening still has me scratching my head! A firework display rounded off a truly wonderful day. Ross and Anna hugged under the freezing night sky with their guests crowded all around them, which was exactly how they had described they wanted their Ashridge House wedding to feel.
