Natural and Candid Family Photography – A Day In The Life Of The Towler Family
Well well well, what a lovely Surrey family photography shoot I have for you today. It is always a wonderful occurrence when friends trust you enough to do your job for their families. When I was asked to photograph the Towler family I was so over joyed! I have known them for years and it was so lovely to photograph them together. As a family they all love their pet dogs so much so it was only right that their day in the life shoot was a walk in the forest with them.
This is what I love about a day in the life family shoots because there are no rules. There is no studio restrictions and I encourage families to choose an event or activity that best suits them. There would be nothing more perfect for the Towler’s than a family dog walk, so we all ventured off into the Surrey hills for a lovely winter walk together. With so many wonderful walks and countryside areas surrounding Surrey the family chose a woodland that they frequently walk the dogs together at. It is important to document your family, especially when your family members are blended it gives a sense of togetherness and unity when having your photograph taken together.
They always say in show business never work with animals or children however I find photography an exception to the rule. I love working with both animals and children so it was a nice change to have fur babies on this shoot instead of actual babies. There is a different atmosphere when you have a shoot with adults and no children. We were able to have a walk without someone getting tired and the only people needing to stop for an emergency toilet break were the fur babies!
If you are worried about having a family shoot because you are unsure about what it would entail – don’t be scared! I love family shoots because it is the perfect mix of candid photography and organised group shots. Predominantly we start out by having a little chat and a cuppa, I want the experience to feel friendly and not awkward. Then we move on to our activity – whether that be playing games in the house, bed time routines or a countryside walk. I then take some documentary candid style images of you and your family together. Nothing forced or stuffy and I am very vocal so I will be chatting to you all the time! Towards the end of our session together or when the mood strikes (I am a big fan of lighting and backdrops) so if we find a lovely spot we will stop for some guided family portraits. These are not rigid and stiff, but candid and spontaneous. It just helps that you have a professional placing you in the best places!
