An enquiry pops in my inbox: A maternity beach shoot – YES PLEASE!  To add to my excitement an LGBT maternity session to boot! Jumping up from my desk seat and squealing in delight.  This has nothing to do with the fact that COVID had de-railed all of my work the past year. Well, maybe it did a little. But the excitement was mostly to do with the fact that I had never done a maternity beach shoot before. Most of my maternity sessions have been behind closed doors and inside, which is totally lovely. But having the chance to photograph a gorgeous couple and their growing family on the beach (my favourite place to be) had me all sorts of excited.  When Jess and Ella suggested their maternity session on Brighton beach, it felt like the perfect match. The last time that I had done a Brighton beach family shoot was years ago on the depths of Winter.

Jess, Ella and I headed out early and were met with blissful sunshine and the calmest beach you have ever laid eyes on. There were hardly any people about, just a few swimmers in the sea. It felt like on this (usually heaving) stretch of beach that we had the place all to ourselves. Capturing a couple in a new stage of their lives together is pretty incredible.

Having a baby together as a couple is such a special and momentous moment

As a child of LGBT parents, it is also especially special for me as an LGBTQ family photographer to be able to capture a family like mine.  My parents never had an LGBT maternity session as back in the 80’s it was not really something that happened.  So when ever a couple enquire with a family like mine, it always holds a special place in my heart. Since photographing this maternity session Jess and Katie invited me to photograph them before they became a family of four!
